For pushbutton-integrated devices, which are relatively quiet, installation close to the crosswalk departure location is essential enable people to use them effectively. We’ll talk abut this more later, but here’s a graphic example, showing the recommended location of APS in relation to the crosswalks. The pushbutton and APS speaker are right at the top of the curb ramp, next to the level landing. The MUTCD states that the APS should be between the landing of the curb ramp and the crosswalk line furthest from the center of the intersection, and separated by more than 10 feet from other APS on the corner. The MUTCD further states that APS should be within 6 feet of the curb.
