Although most manufacturers are moving away from this now, a microphone may also need to be installed in pedhead. Photo shows the bottom of a pedestrian signal head with a small circular opening. When the microphone is installed in the pedhead, the location and height of the pedhead may affect the APS response to ambient sound.
