Installers need to recognize that the speaker location provides information to the blind user and is an important part of the installation. A speaker that is located incorrectly and poorly oriented may provide ambiguous information about which crossing has been signaled and may result in individuals failing to begin or end crossings on time and within the crosswalk lines. This can be particularly a problem with overhead speaker installations, but can also be a problem with the pushbutton-integrated speaker devices.
