This slide shows the equation used to calculate the duration of the pedestrian crossing time. It is calculated as the length of the WALK interval plus the flashing DON’T WALK interval. The flashing DON’T WALK interval is calculated as the length of the crossing divided by 3.5 feet per second, which is the typical assumption for walking speed. Many people do not realize that the flashing DON’T WALK interval is intended to be long enough to complete the entire crossing.
